Dr Ela Manga

A Leader in integrating Breathwork with Integrative Medicine

Pneumanity™ Living

Join us in exploring the expansive journey of Ela Manga, an integrative medical doctor committed to healing and bringing heart back into the art of medicine. Her medical training was a step towards her true vocation as a facilitator of health and a catalyst for change.

Dr Ela Manga

Dr. Ela Manga is a medical doctor, author, and pioneering voice in the field of breathwork. In practice for over 25 years, she quickly saw the limits of Western medicine and committed to a holistic paradigm that honours our multidimensional nature and innate capacity to heal.

Drawing from her Indian heritage, South African roots, and life experience, Ela has forged a path that challenges the constructs of separation, disconnection and supremacy— from the personal to societal — and breaks the silence around death, fear, and power. She has a passion and gift for shifting perspectives, dissolving conventional narratives, and inviting people to see themselves through new, liberating angles that emphasise wholeness rather than fragmentation. Known for blending the precision of science with the depth of mysticism, she opens pathways of understanding that feel both grounded and transcendent.

As founder of Breathwork Africa, she has developed a radical yet gentle approach to breath that integrates science, indigenous wisdom, and the feminine principle of fierce presence. For her, breath is more than a tool for wellbeing — it is collective medicine, a force for justice, and the language of our shared humanity.

Ela’s work is not about comfort — it is about awakening. She invites people to disrupt rigid paradigms, think differently about what it means to be alive, and reclaim the creative intelligence of the body. She is passionate about restoring awe in the human form, not as escape, but as fuel for responsibility, agency, and collective action.

As a woman of breath, Ela embodies both fire and compassion — fierce enough to name the shadows we avoid, and tender enough to hold the spaces where transformation becomes possible.

Her one-on-one work includes guiding leaders to inhabit an embodied, heart-centered territory from which to lead; mentoring health professionals; and supporting people navigating profound change. She empowers individuals with the innate intelligence of their body, restoring agency and vitality — particularly for those under-resourced and marginalised. She also works with leaders, activists, and healers to prevent burnout and sustain their purpose.

Author of BREATHE – Strategising Energy in the Age of Burnout and UMOYA – The Science and Wonder of Conscious Breathing, and creator of the 7 Threads of Pneumanity, Ela brings fiery compassion to global stages, medical schools, leadership forums, and grassroots communities. Through Breathwork Africa, now active in 27 countries, she continues to weave breath into the work of community building, activism, and consciousness..

Based in Johannesburg, the pulsating, multicultural hub of South Africa, Ela spends her days working with individuals on their journey of change, training breathwork practitioners, and collaborating with communities, businesses, and schools. She also carves time for her own creative expressions — through watercolour, time in nature (her greatest teacher), and listening to her breath to guide her next steps.

The breath. This simple yet magnificent instrument that each of us has access to, every day, generously offers a universe of potential: health and vitality, mental and physical fortitude, enlivened senses and spirit, abundant healing and connection.

On these pages, medical doctor and Breathwork Africa founder Dr Ela Manga takes us on a journey from the tip of our nose to the soles of our feet, inviting us to hold in awe what is arguably the most underrated and disregarded function of life: breathing.

Drawing on her philosophy of PneumanityTM – where the essence of life and our shared humanity meet – Ela has developed an integrated approach to conscious breathing that honours the ancient breathwork traditions while celebrating modern medicine and the science of anatomy.

On this creative journey, you will be guided to return to the wisdom of your body and mind, exploring the ‘why’ of conscious breathing while receiving an introduction to the ‘how’ of breathing techniques. You will also become privy to a broader, inclusive perspective that reminds us of the innate intelligence of our interconnected makeup and inspires us to care for it, each other, and the planet in a ‘whole’ new way.

Profound. Insightful. Transformative. Breathe brilliantly shines light on the basic laws of energy by weaving together neuroscience and Eastern philosophy.

Burnout has become the new cancer of our complex world. Faced with a collective global energy crisis, the fractured distractions and demands of our digitalised lives have drained us of our inherent life force. As we tumble into a vortex of disconnection, our natural energy resources are constantly being depleted.

Breathe is an illuminating user-friendly guide to help develop conscious strategies and habits to master our health and energy.

Through compelling real-life stories, the symptoms and causes of burnout are explored, highlighting the difference between stressful adrenalised energy versus a more sustainable authentic energy. Breathe tackles the challenges of mastering health, vocation and meaningful relationships, guiding us to an authentic life of inner change and sustained vitality.

Life. Breath. Belonging.

This is not a retreat or a wellness escape – it is a sacred homecoming. This immersive experience is an invitation to soften the illusion of separation, to reweave the delicate threads of our shared humanity, to stand in quiet defiance of hyper-individualism and stand at the threshold between remembering and imagining. Held in the gentle arms of Kerala – “God’s Own Country” – this journey unfolds in a landscape steeped in soul. Through breath, sound, movement, and story, we will explore the deep resonance between Southern African and South Indian traditions. This is where myth and medicine meet. Where song becomes breath. Where you remember who you are.

What People Are Saying

Breathwork has been an important  self-regulating tool at my disposal for some time and it has helped me cope with the various states of dis-ease in which I found myself on a daily basis.

Since the first time I practiced Breathwork with Dr Manga, I have used the various breathing techniques I’ve learnt to cope with social stresses, post covid symptoms and burnout. The recognition that the power lies within me, sustains me through the deep bouts of anxiety. Teaching people to tap into their own inner resources in order to cope with the pressures of daily life or past traumas is what I believe Breathwork Africa does.

Being empowered to help myself through conscious connected breath has been the greatest gift and knowing that I can in any moment navigate my situation through the use of the various techniques I’ve learned has been the best thing during moments of overwhelm. It’s something I truly believe that everyone should be able to do.

When we are on a difficult path, if we keep our eyes open, we will find healers and guides to help us, people who appear at just the right time, with just the right tools and lessons to teach us.

Dr. Ela Manga has been one of those people in my life – her wisdom, compassion and insight have helped me to look at my challenges differently, and to step through the bars of the mental cage I had constructed for myself.

The tool which she offers – breathwork – has been life changing, in a way which I would not have believed possible. I tried it out of desperation, and discovered I could use it to change my mood, my energy, and to fill my body with the kind of joy and relief I am not used to experiencing on my own.

Perhaps, as she has shown me, because we are not really on our own.

The journey is far from over, and I look forward to continuing, knowing that there are more surprises ahead.
